Founded in 1968, the department of Business Mathematics has been uniquely committed to an educational motto “developing business applications upon solid mathematical rationale“, integrated mathematics, management, business and information science, and focused on interdisciplinary training with a mission to advance knowledge, promote research and cultivate leaders with extensive mathematics fundamentals.

The department of Business Mathematics is a department of honored traditions; its alumni can be seen in a very wide range of fields such as insurance, finance, information technology, and management, etc. Its actuarial training is especially well-known. Nearly twenty percent of actuarial fellows of Taiwan are its graduates. The outstanding performance of its alumni and constant efforts of the faculty in teaching and research have won the department of Business Mathematics a favorable recognition and an excellent reputation. The design of its core courses is the first of its kind. It first incorporated insurance, actuarial science and financial engineering into an interdisciplinary curriculum, and put equal emphasis on both applications and theories hoping to cultivate leaders with strong analytical and quantitative ability and multi-field talents. Today, the department of Business Mathematics comprises three academic programs: undergraduate, master, as well as executive master programs; and attracts approximately two hundred new students each year.

Recently, the continuous innovations of all kinds of financial and insurance products and the dramatic increase of the risk in financial markets have pushed the demand for professional financial engineers and actuaries as high as never before. The department of Business Mathematics has a longtime focus on the integration of mathematics, management, information, financial engineering and actuarial science as well as interdisciplinary training of the above fields, which make its graduates perfectly suited for careers in finance and insurance. To differentiate itself from other competitors, the department of Business Mathematics has dedicated to the in-dept development of two major fields: financial engineering and actuarial mathematics, and plans to change the name of the department to “Department of Financial Engineering and Actuarial Mathematics” accordingly.
